The Sports Massage Association is the UK professional body representing sports massage practitioners and the profession.
Driven by the increasing demand for sports massage among sports participants but confusion as to who was appropriately qualified, the Sports Massage Association was launched at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 to be independent body regulating sports massage practitioners in the UK. With support from the leading sports bodies, related professional groups and educators it has grown to represent over 1000 members and is now recognised and the lead body for sports massage by the major employers in the UK.

DISCOUNTED FIRST AID TRAINING FOR SMA MEMBERS
The Sports Massage Association has teamed up with ABC First Aid
to offer discounted First Aid courses for members. All SMA members are required to have an up to date qualification and this course will be not only give them a 3 year, HSE recognised 'Appointed Person' qualification, it is also geared specifically for those working in sport.

SPORTS MASSAGE ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES PROFESSIONAL TEAM PRACTITIONER SPECIAL INTEREST MEMBERSHIP
Along with sports masseurs from Premiership football clubs in the UK, plus other working in elite sport in the UK, the Sports Massage Association has launched a new membership category.
Through recent meetings with those working at this level, we have developed a membership option geared specifically to meet the needs of those working with professional teams and athletes.

NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL STANDARDS PROJECT LAUNCHED 25 Sep 2007
On 25 September 2007 Skills Active, the Sector Skills Council for Sport, Recreation and Health & Fitness, launched the project to redevelop the National Occupational Standards for 'Sports Therapy'.
The Sports Massage Association is involved in this project at both Steering Group and Expert Working Group level and the first Steering Group meeting on 25 September saw representative bodies from the industry such as the Football Association, Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine, British Association of Sport and Rehabilitators and Trainers and educators meet to outline the scope of this project. The detailed project plan and full information will be made available soon.


SMOKE FREE ENGLAND - NEW LEGISLATION AFFECTS MASSAGE PRACTITIONERS
Following on from Scotland, Wales and Ireland, England went smoke fee on 1 July.
By law your clinic rooms have to display compliant No Smoking signs
